We started this project in the fall. We wanted to make cookies as gifts for
our families, but we needed to buy ingredients. We went on a math trail to
our local Fred Meyer store with the list of ingredients we needed. Our job was
to find the best bargain for each ingredient.

We also had time to interview employees and ask them how they used math in their jobs.
Here are some of the responses we received:
Kelly had to know how to make change.
Patty, the bakery clerk had to know how to divide pies and how much to
charge for cupcakes.
Carol in the Seafood department had to use scales to weigh.
Daniel, the food assistant manager, had to calculate how much food the store sells in a week.
Paola's job was to restock the dairy. She had to count how much was bought or sold.
Maria, the cake decorator, measures ingredients for cakes.
Young works in the Sushi bar and makes 100 boxes of sushi in 8 hours!
Jason in produce figures out how much fruit to throw away.
Ian in produce has to count boxes of broccoli
Holly cuts fruit and has to figure out how many fruit cups to make and
how many were sold.
Dante has to weigh the furniture that comes into the store.

We came back to school and figured out how much we saved on what we bought.
We wrote out how we figured out the savings and put it up on this website for you
to enjoy!

Once we had the ingredients, we had a baking day! We baked many cookies and decorated
plates to put them on as gifts for the holidays.
